Ratnagiri Buddhist Monastery

135 km from Puri (3 hrs) · Jajpur district 2–3 hours

Excavated ruins of a great Mahavihara on a hill above the Birupa river — a colossal Buddha, exquisitely carved monastery doorway, 700 votive stupas and a museum of Vajrayana bronzes.

History & legend

Ratnagiri flourished from the 5th to the 13th century, peaking under the Bhauma-Kara dynasty (8th–10th century) as a major Vajrayana Buddhist university mentioned in Tibetan texts as a centre for the Kalachakra Tantra. Excavations by the ASI (1958–61) under Debala Mitra revealed two monasteries, a huge stupa and thousands of sculptures; the carved doorframe of Monastery 1 is considered among the finest in Indian Buddhist art. Fresh excavations begun in 2024 uncovered a colossal Buddha head and votive stupas, suggesting links with maritime Southeast Asia.
