The vibrant town where Odisha's appliqué (Chandua) canopies, umbrellas and lamps are stitched — the same art that decorates the Rath Yatra chariots.
History & legend
Pipili's Chandua appliqué craft was patronised by the Gajapati kings of Puri from at least the 12th century to supply canopies, umbrellas (chhatri), banners and Tahia head-dresses for the Jagannath temple and the Rath Yatra chariots — a duty the local Darji community still performs. The vivid layered cloth work, cut into motifs of parrots, elephants, lotus and the sun, received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2008 as Pipili Appliqué Work.
