Bhattarika Temple

145 km from Puri (3.5 hrs) · Cuttack district 1.5 hours

A hilltop shrine to the goddess Bhattarika on a rock bluff above the Mahanadi near Baramba, reached by a scenic riverside road and boat rides on the river.

History & legend

The goddess Bhattarika is the presiding deity of the former Baramba princely state, whose Ganga-dynasty rulers built the current temple in the 16th century on a site worshipped since the Bhauma-Kara period. Legend says Parashurama prayed to the goddess here before fighting Sahasrarjuna. A 2,000-year-old settlement and Mauryan-period pottery have been found nearby, and the Mahanadi bluff was a strategic river fort site through the Maratha era.
